Transition element

A transition element is an element that can form at least on ion with  a partially filled d subshell.

Physical properties of transition elements include:

  • high densities
  • high melting points
  • hardness and rigidness, so that they can be used for constructions.
  • good conductors of electricity

Chemical properties of transition elements include:

  • showing several different oxidation states in their compounds
  • good catalysts
  • form coloured compounds
  • form complexes with ligands.
  •
